Try the Best Drinks in Playa del Carmen

Mexico and the Caribbean has gained a reputation for it’s delicious and refreshing drinks. From Margaritas, to Micheladas, Morjitos, Mezcal, and other local favorites.

The Michelada

The Michelada is a Mexican cerveza preparation that consists of lime juice, chili powder, hot sauce, Clamato, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Similar to the bloody marry it’s known as a hangover cure. This versatile and savory drink pairs excellently with aguachiles, tacos, or anything really.

You can get an excellent michelada at: 

  • Las Helodias (Calle 28 between 1era ave. and cozumel)

  • Las de Guanatos (Avenida 115 between av. Colosio and Calle Isla Mujeres)

Margaritas

Margeritas are arguably Mexico’s most famous drink. Surprisingly it can be difficult to find a good margarita that isn’t made with overly sweet premixed mixers. A good margarita is made with fresh ingredients including real limes, a high end tequila, triple sec, and a sugar and salt rim. You can choose to have this drink blended or on the rocks, and flavored with the options of Mango, Strawberry, Mint, and others.

Mojitos

With Cuba only about 200 miles away, why not try a Havana Club Mojito. The mojito is a mix of rum, lime juice, mint, sugar, and a splash of soda.

Mezcal

Mezcal is a type of tequila made from an Agave plant native to Mexico. The flavor is distinctly different from tequila due to strong smokey undertones. Mexican Tequilla can only be made with blue agave. Mezcal on the other hand can be made from many different varieties of Agave. A common drink made with Mezcal is the Paloma. The Paloma is usually made with Tequilla, but may be substituted for a smokey Mezcal. High quality Mezcal can also be sipped.
